In the hot town of Garissa, 36 different schools convened for a 6 day workshop competition, for the track 14 project, bringing together over 200 student participants and more than 40 teachers. Our teams at eKitabu and ChipuRobo brought together: Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF), and CEMASTEA, with support from regional coordinators and national judging teams.
The primary goal was to integrate students we've trained into the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair, this was initiated by expanding engagement with new schools that are currently participating in track 14. Additionally, we successfully strengthened collaboration between KSEF and CEMASTEA, which would be vital for future student- led programs.
We observed there was a significant increase in the number of female student participants that were also achieving top positions. This is a notable change compared to the previous track event, which was promoted by the increase in nationwide participation with strong regional presentations that ensured no student was left behind. Therefore increasing opportunities and accessibility underserved and marginalized schools to the STEM programs.
The current education system focuses on hands-on project based. The STEM learning models that increase alignment with real engineering and innovation practices for the real world. We are seeing a difference in innovation whereby students move to building robots that solve current challenges, by using AI and robotics, as they can be used on daily life hurdles. Due to these changes there is a consensus agreement that the growing emphasis on AI literacy is essential for building a national talent pipeline in these fields.
There was also a significant discovery in terms of performance , between the top performing and low performing school, this was impacted by the availability and the importance of teacher capacity and mentorship programs within the school. It is therefore, that we have stated the initiative to train teachers for STEM programs and provide reliable information regarding engineering and robotics programs.
